Young Scot & Financial Capability

It’s important for young people to understand their money and be financially capable and we have developed a strong partnership with the Financial Standards Authority (FSA) and Lloyds TSB Scotland to help us address this issue.
*

These partnerships enable us to provide reliable and up-to-date information and services to help young people develop the knowledge, behaviours and attitudes they need to understand their finances now and in the future.

We use a variety of online and offline methods to provide young people with the information they need, in a way that suits them best.

Young Scot InfoLine Phone and Web Service (www.youngscotinfoline.org)

The InfoLine website is aimed at post-school young people to support the transition from school into either work, training, further or higher education and independent living. The Money & Benefits information channel hosts summarised information and provides a range of links to other helpful websites.

The free Young Scot InfoLine enquiry service is another way we provide young people with the financial information.  The service is available Monday – Friday 10am – 6pm and trained Young Scot advisors can answer questions on banking, student finance, ethical money services, training and work, housing and benefits and signpost young people to trusted sources of information and advice in their area.

Young Scot Handbook

The annual Young Scot Information Handbook provides young people in-school with a whole host of money related information in the Money chapter.  This includes bank accounts, credit unions and budgeting. We try to promote a healthy relationship with money and finance management from a young age to try to avoid future negative financial relations.

Young Scot Information Portals

There are two Young Scot national youth information portals, one for young people in-school and one for young people who have left school.  Both sites aim to support young people with their financial choices and options.  The Money Channel area of the in-school website provides young people with financial information on everything from the minimum wage to how to open a bank account and this compliments the Information Handbook.  The post-school InfoLine site there is much greater content both in terms of volume and depth, in an accessible format, to support young people making the move to independent living.
