Young Scot & The Arts

Young Scot works in collaborative partnership with the Scottish Arts Council to break down barriers which stop young people engaging with the arts and releasing their inner creative talent.
*

Here at Young Scot, we strive to provide young people aged 11 – 26 years old with access to quality assured and relevant arts information, signposting and opportunities.   We have worked closely with key stakeholders and arts organisations to help us improve and update our arts content.

Young Scot Arts Information – In-school

The arts information we provide is tailored for young people in and out-of-school and is available in a variety of formats including online, offline factsheets and downloadable podcasts, to suit the young person’s individual needs and preferences.

Arts information for young people in-school, aged 11 – 18 years old, is predominantly delivered in the annual Young Scot Information Handbook which has a full chapter dedicated to the arts.  The Young Scot online arts channel and quarterly Young Scot magazine provides young people in this age group with a variety of interesting features and interviews to provide an insight into the arts.

Young Scot Arts Information – Post School

The information tailored to the out-of-school age group, 18 – 26 years old, is mostly provided on the Young Scot InfoLine website.  Information available ranges from general arts information, funding opportunities, case studies of successful people working in the arts and careers advice and information.

Young Scot Arts Action Fund

A key element of our partnership with Creative Scotland is the Young Scot Arts Action Fund, a pot of money available to young people who are wishing to unleash their artistic ideas and need a cash injection to fulfil their creative potential.  The Arts Action Fund can grant individuals up to £200 and up to £750 for groups aged 11 to 26.  Since it was launched in 2005, over £66,960.30 has been given away to young people.

Funding has been granted to a variety of projects from all over Scotland and the feedback we receive shows the positive impact the Arts Action Fund is having on people in Scotland.  In 2009, Moira Watson from Dundee, was granted £200 to cover framing and display costs at the first showcase of her sketches at Dundee’s famous venue, The Doghouse.  Moira says: “The night was a great success, and it wouldn’t have been possible without help from the Young Scot Arts Action Fund. I’m so proud that the night went so well, and I’m planning keeping the money I made from the event to use towards putting on more exhibitions in the future.”

Young Scot and Arts Opportunities

We work hard to increase opportunities available for young people to experience the arts.  This has involved taking inviting young people along to events at large theatres, the Edinburgh International Book Festival and many other unique events which young people wouldn’t normally experience.

The national youth opportunities search engine, Young Scot WOW, is a great way of informing young people about any arts opportunities available to them.  This includes theatre shows, cinema listings, creative writing workshops, photography exhibitions and much more.
